The San Diego Sisters went on campus to show support for our drag brothers and sisters, the LGBT students, and the decision of USD, as is stated within its mission…to encourage understanding/awareness of gender identity in its many expressions and to highlight the importance of the dignity and respect deserving of every individual…celebrating the freedom of diversity!! The event was hosted by the fabulous Regina Styles and Rudy Ramrod…and featured DJ TOOKANSAM. Some GREAT prizes were raffled off, with the grand prize being a 3 hour DJ/Karaoke session by the fantastic LAURA JANE! All proceeds from “Drag It Out” went to support South Bay Pride. Thank you to everyone who came out and showed the love for our very own San Diego Kings Club and South Bay Pride!!

On Saturday evening, 23 April 2005, folks who came to be the initial Founders of the Asylum worked together with the Los Angeles Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in an event called “The [Last] Passion of Adam” as a send-off for the then-current Mr San Diego Leather Adam Latham on his journey to IML. The next day, a few of the LA Sisters met for what The Asylum would later call “The Last Supper”. Fourteen San Diegans joined Sisters Candy Cide, Unity, Tragedy-Ann and Erotica to chat about the start of an SPI Order in San Diego.

With a clear-as-mud sense of purpose and a foggy knowledge that they were going to do something, one individual collected the names, phone numbers and emails of almost everyone who was there. A fortnight later saw ten of us gathering in what would be considered our first General Meeting for a viewing of “Drag Nuns in Tinseltown,” a documentary that had just been produced by the LA Sisters.

Another fortnight went by and those people finally got their crap together to meet in one place and try their hands at the immediately intimidating (and oh-so-mysterious) white-face that is a tradedress of the Worldwide Order. At a home just east of San Diego that was nicknamed “The Nun Factory”, the Blesséd Eleven created their first nunly manifestations.

The next morning, a few of those same, fledgling nuns drove up to Long Beach and joined the LA Sisters at Long Beach Pride, 22 May 2005. That manifestation, considered the Asylum’s “First Manifestation – Out of Town,” exposed the young Acolytes to a slice of life to come as well as landing them in the pages of SoCal dot magazine.

Whilst in Long Beach and enjoying the Pride Festival, an intrepid photographer snapped this photo of us. The taking of the photo was not so much of a big deal as the Novice Sisters were getting used to the multitude of “Can I take your picture, please” questions that fizzled through the air on that lovely sunny day on Ocean Boulevard. What makes this photo special is that same photographer gave this photo to Sister Amanda five years later during Palm Springs Pride 2010, hoping to give the photo to someone who was in the picture!

In the next month, the San Diego Mission of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (a name officially granted on 8 June 2005) conducted their second General Meeting and a few went north again to attend Christopher Street West 2005 (Los Angeles Pride). Finally, on 25 June, the Novice Sisters manifested for the first time in San Diego by taking to the streets in a bar ministry which concluded at Pecs where these photos were taken. Perhaps the most memorable event of the Asylum’s Virgin Manifestation was when Sister Polly was approached by a gentleman who asked her why she was wearing a Christian-style cross and if she was poking fun at Catholic nuns. Little did those Sisters know that question (and entire conversation) would figure prominently in the Asylum’s mindset.
